Most covalent substances are molecular substances. However, in a few elements and compounds, the non-metal atoms join together by covalent bonds to form a giant network, called giant covalent structure. The bonds extend throughout the whole structure, binding all the atoms together. there are no discrete molecules.

pure substance -> compound -> compounds made up of non-metals only - *usually molecules
*Silicon(IV) oxide is an exception. it has a giant covalent structure
without molecules.
